BSc (Hons) Business Computing

Business computing is the study of computer technology in a commercial context. It integrates aspects of computing with subjects like accounting marketing, business strategy, and information systems. It allows individuals to make use of computer technology to achieve organisational goals.

In an age where we are increasingly dependent on computers for data delivery and analysis, businesses require professionals who can craft robust, reliable and user-friendly software that can be used to create organisational solutions. Our BSc (Hons) Business Computing degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in this dynamic industry with guest lecturers from business organisations sharing their experiences with you.

You will also gain the additional skills employers seek in IT professionals. They include teamwork, leadership managing projects, and problem-solving. The degree will provide a base of knowledge in areas such as software development and programming, web design, databases and information systems, as well as giving you the opportunity to specialize in areas such as marketing, data analytics or advanced computer science.

The course will provide you with a strong understanding of the Windows environment and the use of Windows application software including word processing using Word 2002 for Windows, spreadsheets and database management systems and presentation graphics software and the Internet. In addition it will instruct you about security issues for computers and e-commerce issues.

Typically, the teaching process will be by way of seminars and lectures, with many courses including laboratory-based computer exercises. Students are expected to undertake independent research and study, both at home and at the university.
